Place was a little tough to find and parking is limited. Restaurant is very nice, clean and looks to be going for a trendy vibe. My wife and I went for lunch and the menu was very limited. You had a choice of three entrees, three appetizers, three sandwiches, three salads and three desserts. I ordered the "shrimp" and grits and my wife ordered the burger which came with sweet potato fries, not her favorite, but they don't appear to allow substitutions. The shrimp was tiny and the sweet potato fries weren't crispy at all. The shrimp and grits had a lot more pepper than my liking, to the point that it was the only flavor that really came through. Servings were small, which wouldn't be a bad thing if the food was better. Once we finished dinner, we asked to order coffee from the attached coffee shop. The point of sale system apparently isn't attached so we had to pay and go upstairs to order. The layout of the coffee shop was nice and really is something that downtown needs. Options were, again, limited. The coffee was much better than the food. If I was just grading the coffee shop, I would give it a solid four stars. We may return to try the dinner menu and I will probably go back to the coffee shop, but I don't see me taking a return trip for lunch.
I went the first day and the food was not well prepared, which I totally understand, yet I had to pay $30 for it. We ordered the Hamburger with Sweet Potato fries and the Portabello Sandwich and Sweet Potato Fries. The fries while having a good taste were not even cooked fully. The hamburger was great! The portabello on the sandwich was barely warmed. When we asked our server about it, many apologies were offered and they tried to cook it more. I was given some mac/cheese as a substitute for the undercooked fries and it was just barely warmed. Again, I completely understand soft openings, but don't make your experiential customers pay full price! I want to fully support downtown businesses, but I am struggling with a reason to come back here too soon.
Finally Sumter has another great coffee shop other than BSweets. You can tell this place is still new, but they have a great atmosphere. The coffee is great and they have fresh bagels made in house. One thing they are lacking in is the number of tables upstairs. There are lots of couches to sit on but not too many places to sit and get work or studying done at.
The owner has done a wonderful job of restoring an old building. It's full of character and history. I had breakfast, which was very good. The portions were generous and I enjoyed my visit.
The cafe (w/ table service) is downstairs and the coffee house is upstairs. They have separate entrances, but you can go from one to another inside. The coffee house is okay, it's definitely a restaurant first with coffee being an afterthought. Still, they have a very friendly staff, a comfortable atmosphere, and it's the only decent place to get coffee and espresso drinks downtown.
